I remember reading on webmasterworld a while back on whether you need to use www in website domains.

I think the argument came down to it doesn’t matter whether you use it or not, but you need to keep it consitent through out the site.

I was having a problem with hostels.jp as the internal links all dropped the www but the top level of the site could still be reached at www. I wanted to drop the www completely.

Also the two domains had different page rank, so I wanted to stick with just one style. With a bit of messing around I was able to get it down with the htaccess file using the following code:

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{http_host} ^www.hostels.jp
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://hostels.jp/$1 [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php

It will be interesting to see if this will have any improvement on the site with regards to SEO.
