To sell or not sell

Topics: Websites

Last year I created a tonne of different websites. Some still do OK with zero promotion, but others are just sitting there collecting dust. I am starting to think whether I should try and consolidate what I have and selling off the sites I have no interest in.

It is not really like I need the money and it is hard to know if anyone would be interested in buying them. One such site that I would consider selling is barandeventguide.com. It is a listing of bars and taverns in the US. The site is running on Joomla with the Mosets directory component. I bought the data and imported it into the directory.

I might list it on Sitepoint and see if I can get any interest in it.

    Hi Mike,

After following your experiences last year in creating these different sites, it would be interesting to know which ones are doing well and which are struggling.

A post-mortem outlining your thoughts on why certain sites fared well, with or without promotion, while others did not would be a good read.

Thanks for the comment. I would say generally all of the sites that I neglected doing any marketing, or adding new content to are not performing. A future post on this is a good idea.

I am not sure if you remember my dating site http://www.wealthypeopledating.com but people are actually signing up to the site.

Any stats on the February websites? Where you were creating 1 a day… That could be interesting. Though if you haven’t been promoting them then it would be interesting to see if they ever got any organic traffic.

Yes I was also wondering which of those webs “28 sites in 28 days” project started to generate some traffic. I assume you will most likely hold on those and run some clearance sale on the other ones?

I wrote a post today. I hope it answers your questions!

  6. Yes running a web site without giving any marketing to it or new, relevant and interesting content is very difficult and wasteful. I have my own one, a commercial one and i’m constantly working on it, attracting experts in web design and lots of others… If you mean to make money with a site, be ready to invest much into it.
