I listened to Monte Cahn interview Kieren McCarthy last night. Kieren is a UK based freelance writer focusing on the domain industry. He wrote a book simply titled “Sex.com”.
As titillating as it sounds, the book is about how the original owner of sex.com lost the domain and spent the next 10 plus years trying to get it back. It sounds like a fantastic read for anyone interested in domains and the domain industry.
I received another inquiry yesterday from someone interested in another domain I own. I know I shouldn’t really write about until I actually make some progress in the negotiations, but it did make me get interested in domain buying again.

Twitter Updates

You see more and more of this type of shenanigan. People who are creating websites and communities best beware. As soon as it becomes successful, the vultures start to circle. The whole idea that any exposure is good exposure, I don’t think is accurate. I just came from a newsgroup where they allow everyone to post whatever garbage they want. It’s page after page of OT posts. It becomes quite useless for someone looking for relevant material. I think these newsgroups will die out and blogs will take their place because they are more controllable. Moderation is not bad or good. It’s just a tool. You have to facilitate the users and information wisely in order for your site to succeed.
Protecting your domain name is also important. It’s a trademark. In trademark law, if the public starts to use your trademark name as a generic term to describe something like “xeroxing copies” then your trademark is no longer defensible or yours. It’s public domain. So, be careful.
