Problems with providing a free service

I have been thinking about a couple of sites recently, particularly my New Zealand property site.

There are many sites in New Zealand that offer Internet advertising for property sales. Most charge from around $50 to $100 for each property.

I thought that my site would become popular by offering the service free of charge. I have had a few people register and a couple of people upload properties.

One of them is actually my own property, and I occasionally receive emails from interested people. I thought that I could make money from advertising alone.

But with little income coming in, I am reluctant to spend more on advertising. Then I had an idea to charge for listings at say around $50 and join an Affiliate program as a Merchandiser.

People then can earn money from promoting my site. I plan to offer a generous income split of around 50-50 to encourage people to sign up and promote the site.

I have no idea if it will work or not, but it should only cost around $100 to get set up.

  1. How is that real estate site working out for you? I visited it and it looks pretty good. What methods of promotion are you using?

    Best of luck.

Thanks. I have put an ad in a magazine for 3 months which was met with 0 success rate. It could help with longer term branding, but an Adsense campaign would have probably been better.

At the moment I am not doing any other promotion, which is why if I charged for ads at least I would be able to reinvest the money in marketing.

  3. Ah, I see. Yeah, I think adsense would probably work better. Or just promoting it a lot online – forums, blogs, emails, etc. Ever thought about fliers or your local newspapers? I think that might be cheaper and give you some better results. You could always post a message on Craigs List and other free sites like it.

    Good luck!
