HOW TO: Save on Fashion

Keeping up with fashion trends is probably one of the most common item in your personal budget. The changing season does not help either as often times the fad last winter is no longer hot come next year.

So there is no doubt you find yourself updating your wardrobe not only every season, but annually. You may not notice it, but this exercise can be very costly.

So before you hit the shops again, take heed of the following tips below. It is true that keeping yourself fashionably appealing for work and social events is a must but you can achieve the latest look for less.

1. What’s Hot May Be not Hot for You

Do not be swayed with the “what’s in” section in magazine spreads and shop catalogs. Models and celebrities may look nice in that current fashion wear but keep in mind that you are not Kate Moss who can get away with almost anything.

Body sizes for one differ and designs may look nice only for someone with an hour glass figure. So be keen and assess what may be right for your body type as well as your lifestyle. And always stop yourself from running directly to that rack of “New” clothes. Be creative as you may have something already in your wardrobe that is similar and may work just right.

2. Recycle

If you are eying that fur coat that many Hollywood figures are rocking this winter, then head to your parents’ closet first as they may have an old fur jacket to offer you. You can either take the fur out and sew it on a stole or a nice coat you have to get an all new outfit that is just what is trending at the moment.

And because fashion tends to be cyclic anyway, your old relatives’ closet may just be the treasure chest you need. Hats and old-fashioned handbags are coming back right now so why not recycle unused and dusty finds that will give you the exact look you need with the right amount of cleaning and a dash of creativity.

3. Accessorize

Expensive jewelries need not be your best friend when stylish and affordable ones can do. Skim through the pages of glossies and notice how an outfit looks better with the right kind and amount of accessories that are quite easy to replicate when you are keen and resourceful enough.

Layering necklaces and stacking bracelets are favorites nowadays and you can create the look fairly easy from your current collection and from regular accessories shop. Combine what you have and if need be, shop for a statement piece that you can wear from casual to formal.

4. Add Details

With metallic being popular right now, you need not be a walking Christmas tree to stay in trend. Just add a metallic piece, a sequin or two on your favorite blazer and you are good to go. Add some sparkling fake jewels on your hairband or on a pair of shoes and sparkle with every step!

So be a savvy shopper and do not be afraid to put your thinking caps on and create your own similar look from your existing wardrobe. Avoid purchasing items that may be tempting but is definitely not right for you at all. Do not let magazines and celebrities sway you to break your budget. Be in control of your fashion sense and budget and don’t let yourself be a victim in all sense of the word.

I’m used to wear recycled clothes. From the old fashion to the latest fashion. I even sewed it with my hands. So rather buy a brand new, I’ll just do a make over on my old clothes.
