New advertiser

March 31, 2006

I have another advertiser who signed up for Linkworth. My income from them is nearly $200 a month!

Adsense continues its downward spiral from January, despite or maybe because of adding a heap of new sites. I have read that a low performing site affects the whole Adsense account.

I have also read that taking the code off low performing pages, can improve earnings, but I don’t know if it is worth the effort. Always optimistic, I am just hoping that things will get better. Or, I can find other good sources of income such as Linkworth and affiliate sales.

Google Analytics Invitation

March 30, 2006

I was too slow to sign up for Google Analytics the first time around, so I missed getting an account.

I just received an email from Google inviting me too join up. I don’t buy any additional statistic packages, so the extra information should be useful.

Top Paying Keywords

March 27, 2006

Found a good post on CyberWyre listing top paying keywords. It looks as though “mesothelioma” is still doing very well. Before you go out and start making a new website around these topics, remember that these are also the most competitive keywords on the internet.

Even if someone clicks on a top paying keyword ad, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will get this much per click. There are other factors which Google seems to take into account.

$54.33 mesothelioma lawyers
$47.79 what is mesothelioma
$47.72 peritoneal mesothelioma
$47.25 consolidate loans
$47.16 refinancing mortgage
$45.55 tax attorney
$41.22 mesothelioma
$38.86 car accident lawyer
$38.68 ameriquest mortgage
$38.03 mortgage refinance
$37.55 refinancing
$35.99 auto accident attorney
$35.52 equity mortgage

Web 2.0 site for sale on Sitepoint

March 26, 2006

I have decided to cut down on the number of blogs I am running. My Web2.0discussion site is one that I am least interested in working on, but I believe it has good potential for the right owner.

I have started the auction at $10 with a fairly high BIN (buy it now) price of $500. I am thinking maybe someone can see the potential of the domain.

The listing can viewed here:

What is the point of www

March 21, 2006

I remember reading on webmasterworld a while back on whether you need to use www in website domains.

I think the argument came down to it doesn’t matter whether you use it or not, but you need to keep it consitent through out the site.

I was having a problem with hostels.jp as the internal links all dropped the www but the top level of the site could still be reached at www. I wanted to drop the www completely.

Also the two domains had different page rank, so I wanted to stick with just one style. With a bit of messing around I was able to get it down with the htaccess file using the following code:

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{http_host} ^www.hostels.jp
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://hostels.jp/$1 [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php

It will be interesting to see if this will have any improvement on the site with regards to SEO.

New Directory Site

March 20, 2006

I have been working on a new directory type site the last couple of days.

The site is a directory for flight schools in Australia. You can see the site here:

Flight Schools Australia

I am thinking that bidding on aviation type keywords should be relatively high. If I can get some traffic to the site, perhaps I could charge for some featured listings.

I have at least one more idea for a directory site. These types of sites should run themselves, new content is created by people visiting the site leaving me with little much else to do once I have put in the time to set the site up.

Controversial advertising campaigns

March 18, 2006

There is nothing like having a bit of controversy when launching a new advertising campaign.

The new Australia tourism advertisement was banned by Britain’s Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre (BAAC), because it featured a young girl ’swearing’.

The advertisement shows various scenes around Australia and in the final shot a bikini-clad girl asks viewers, “So where the bloody hell are you?”

The BACC’s managing editor Paul Denham said: “Practice, experience and research lead us to avoid including swearing in television advertising.”

By banning the ad, the campaign has become a world news story. I wonder if the producers of the advertisement realized that it would create such a stir.

I know it made me feel like going back to Australia.

If you are not too offended you can see the ad here:

Niche website strategy

March 17, 2006

I thank the people for posting comments on my last entry. I must admit, I have no idea if this is the right or wrong way to go.

People often post messages on webmasterworld.com as to whether they should concentrate on one big site or a bunch of mini-sites. My advice is “diversification”. Small sites, big sites, blogs, forums, classifieds, free information, paid information and so on.

I tend to make a site from an idea I have and just go with it. Market research is definitely a good idea and could produce much better results, but I haven’t tried this much.

My strategies are a bit hit and miss, without much thought as to whether a new site will be successful or not. I put up a site, add some content, promote it a little, then sit back for a while to see if I get any good results.

I am usually happy just to get one affiliate sale. If I can get at least one sale, I know that there is definitely potential. I have found checking my sites stats fairly regularly, especially when I have some traffic to the site, so I can know exactly where people coming from and what they are interested in on the site.

This is a rough kind of way I am working. My personality doesn’t cater for working to deadlines or strict plans, but setting goals does definitely help.

Other than my time and the $10 it costs to register a domain, it is pretty much a risk free investment.

A website a week

March 16, 2006

I have been thinking of the feasibility of creating one new website per week. I can’t keep creating blog type websites. It is taking too much of my time updating the existing blogs I have.

It is bad enough thinking of how I have to upgrade my existing blogs to version 2 of WP.

I have started another new website: Designer Corkscrews. I like the design of theme. It is basically just affiliate links to Amazon. I doubt much that it will make money, but in total it only took a couple of hours to put together.

At least than $10 a domain, I only need to earn $11 from it to turn a profit.
